Drivers in Richland are facing temporary traffic disruptions today as roadwork continues on a key intersection improvement project. City officials have announced lane closures on George Washington Way on Tuesday, June 9, between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. as construction crews complete final work on the South George Washington Way Intersection Improvements Project.

The work is part of an ongoing effort to upgrade traffic flow and safety at one of the city’s busy corridors. Crews are finishing curb improvements and applying new pavement markings, which require short-term lane restrictions during daytime hours.

According to the city, the closure affects two key areas. The northbound left-turn lane from George Washington Way onto Aaron Drive is closed, along with the southbound far-left center lane on George Washington Way. Drivers are advised to expect slower movement through the area while work is underway.

Despite the closures, Aaron Drive remains open to traffic. However, northbound drivers who normally turn onto Aaron Drive will need to follow a detour route. The city has directed motorists to use Comstock Street and Goethals Drive to reach their destination.

Officials said the detour will be clearly marked, but they are encouraging drivers to stay alert and follow posted signs carefully. Minor delays are expected throughout the morning and early afternoon while crews complete their work.

City transportation staff are asking residents to plan ahead and allow extra travel time if passing through the affected area. Even short detours can cause small backups during peak movement times, especially near intersections.

The South George Washington Way Intersection Improvements Project is aimed at improving long-term traffic safety and efficiency. Projects like this typically include upgrades to road surfaces, turning lanes, pedestrian access, and signage to reduce congestion and improve overall flow.

While short-term disruptions are expected during construction, officials say the improvements are designed to benefit drivers in the long run. Safer turning lanes and clearer markings are intended to reduce collision risks and improve traffic coordination in a growing part of the city.

Construction crews are working within a limited time window to reduce inconvenience for commuters. The city has scheduled work during daytime hours to complete tasks efficiently, while keeping most routes open whenever possible.

Drivers are also encouraged to use caution when passing through the construction zone. Reduced lane widths, shifting traffic patterns, and worker activity can create unexpected slowdowns. Officials stress that safety remains the top priority for both drivers and construction teams.

Local traffic updates will continue as the project progresses, with additional short-term closures possible if needed to complete remaining tasks. The city has not announced further long-term disruptions but advises residents to stay informed through official updates.

Once completed, the improvements on George Washington Way are expected to support smoother traffic flow between residential and commercial areas. The upgrades are part of broader efforts to modernize transportation infrastructure in Richland and improve daily commuting conditions for residents.

For now, drivers are urged to remain patient, follow detours, and plan ahead to avoid delays during the scheduled work period.
