Middle school students from Orange County achieved strong national recognition at the 2026 United States Academic Pentathlon National Finals held in Nashville, Tennessee. The teams earned top placements and multiple individual medals across several academic categories, highlighting their performance on a national stage.
The Academic Pentathlon Orange County teams competed on May 15 and 16 in a rigorous academic contest designed for students in grades six through eight. Participants were tested in five subject areas: literature, mathematics, science, social science, and fine arts. The competition also included written tests, essays, and team-based events. This year’s theme focused on “The Roaring Twenties,” adding a historical and cultural dimension to the academic challenges.
Students from several schools represented Orange County, including Gordon H. Beatty Middle School in the Buena Park School District, McGarvin Intermediate School in the Garden Grove Unified School District, and Fairmont Schools’ Historic Anaheim campus. A team from Hosler Middle School in the Lynwood Unified School District also participated after qualifying through regional competitions organized by the Orange County Department of Education.
The results showed strong performances across multiple divisions. McGarvin Intermediate School’s seventh-grade team earned first place in the 7th Grade Invited Division, securing a national championship title. This marked one of the top achievements for the county at the national finals.
Gordon H. Beatty Middle School’s sixth-grade team finished second in the 6th Grade Champions Division. McGarvin’s eighth-grade team also placed second in the 8th Grade Champions Division, while Fairmont Schools earned second place in the 8th Grade Invited Division. These results reflected consistent performance across different grade levels and school programs.
In addition to team success, students earned a large number of individual medals. Fairmont students collected 22 medals, Gordon H. Beatty students earned 14 medals, and McGarvin students secured 51 medals across various subjects and categories. These achievements highlight both individual academic strength and effective teamwork.
The United States Academic Pentathlon is organized under the United States Academic Decathlon framework. It is designed to encourage academic excellence, teamwork, and critical thinking among middle school students. Participants compete in teams that include students from three academic categories based on grade point average: Honor, Scholastic, and Varsity. This structure allows students with different academic backgrounds to participate and contribute equally to their teams.
The program is supported locally by the Orange County Department of Education, which manages the Academic Events and Recognition Programs. The department coordinates regional competitions that help schools prepare for national-level participation.
Organizers say the Academic Pentathlon helps students build confidence, communication skills, and subject knowledge through structured academic competition. The event also encourages collaboration, as students must work together to succeed across multiple disciplines.
This year’s national finals in Nashville brought together schools from across the United States, creating a competitive environment that tested both academic ability and teamwork under pressure.
For Orange County students, the results reflected months of preparation and consistent effort. Coaches noted that success at the national level is the result of disciplined study habits, strong school support, and commitment from students across all participating schools.
The Academic Pentathlon Orange County results continue a tradition of strong performance in academic competitions, reinforcing the region’s reputation for educational achievement and student engagement in advanced learning programs.
