Washington state is seeking approximately $76 million in federal reimbursements for highway repairs following the historic flooding that struck the region in December.
State officials say the funding request has been submitted to the Federal Highway Administration and is intended to cover emergency repairs and long-term restoration work on highways damaged during the severe weather event.
Although state leaders expect federal officials to reimburse most of the eligible costs, transportation officials caution that the process could take several years to complete.
The latest request is separate from previous federal aid applications related to the flooding disaster.
Earlier requests focused on helping residents recover from storm damage, restoring public infrastructure, and supporting communities affected by widespread flooding. The storms damaged thousands of homes, forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate, and caused significant destruction across Washington’s transportation network.
To date, Washington has requested more than $250 million in federal assistance connected to the flooding response and recovery effort.
One of the most heavily damaged transportation corridors was U.S. Highway 2.
The major route, which connects communities across the Cascade Mountains, suffered extensive damage when parts of the roadway collapsed during the flooding.
The destruction forced officials to close a 50-mile section between Skykomish and Leavenworth for more than two weeks.
Emergency crews worked around the clock to restore access and reopen the highway ahead of schedule using temporary repairs.
However, transportation officials say permanent restoration work remains underway.
Sections of U.S. Highway 2 have experienced temporary closures in recent weeks as construction teams continue repair efforts.
According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the state is seeking roughly $16 million in federal reimbursement for emergency work completed on the highway.
Another $16 million is being requested for permanent repairs that are still in progress.
The funding request also includes repair projects on several other highways affected by the flooding.
Among them are Interstate 90, Highway 20, State Route 410, U.S. Highway 12, State Route 542, and U.S. Highway 101.
Floodwaters caused significant damage in multiple locations.
Along U.S. Highway 12 near Naches, more than 300 feet of roadway and guardrail were washed away.
On State Route 542, commonly known as the Mount Baker Highway, erosion removed approximately 110 feet of embankment beneath the roadway, threatening the stability of the route.
Meanwhile, a landslide near Forks damaged a section of U.S. Highway 101, requiring crews to construct a reinforced retaining wall to stabilize the area and protect the roadway from further movement.
Governor Bob Ferguson previously praised transportation workers and emergency crews for their response to the disaster.
During his State of the State address in January, he highlighted the efforts of state employees and partner agencies that restored access to damaged roads under difficult conditions.
Officials reported that transportation crews cleared and reopened 97 roads within four weeks following the flooding.
State transportation leaders say the reimbursement process will likely move slowly.
They point to previous disaster recovery projects as an example, noting that federal reimbursements for some earlier events took years to arrive.
As permanent repair projects continue, the total amount requested from the federal government could change.
Transportation officials have already submitted the required documentation to begin the review process with the Federal Highway Administration.
The agency has not publicly commented on the request.
Meanwhile, other recovery programs related to the flooding are continuing.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency distributed approximately $14.5 million in individual assistance to flood victims before the program closed last month.
State officials noted that the amount provided was lower than initial estimates of community needs following the disaster.
Washington also established a separate state assistance program for residents affected by flooding. However, officials said strict eligibility requirements limited participation and left much of the available funding unused.
In addition to recovery funding, Washington has appealed a federal decision regarding a separate request for $36 million in flood mitigation projects designed to reduce future flood risks.
State officials say they are still awaiting a response to that appeal.
The Washington Flood Highway Repairs request represents one of the largest transportation recovery efforts in recent state history. As reconstruction continues, officials hope federal support will help restore critical highways and strengthen transportation infrastructure against future severe weather events.
