The University of Notre Dame remains the highest-ranked university in Indiana in the latest U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings for 2026-27. The new rankings, released on Tuesday, place greater attention on college value, affordability, and graduate success.
The annual rankings are closely watched by students and families across the United States. This year, the ranking system was updated to reflect growing concerns about the cost of higher education and the long-term benefits of earning a degree.
U.S. News introduced several changes to its methodology. One of the biggest updates is a new factor called Earnings by Major. This measure looks at how much students earn four years after graduation. The information comes from data collected by the U.S. Department of Education.
The new approach aims to help families understand not only academic quality but also the financial outcomes that can follow a college education. As tuition costs remain a major concern, many students are paying closer attention to value when choosing a university.
Notre Dame continued its strong performance in the national rankings. The university tied for 20th place among national universities, the same position it held last year. The school has consistently been the highest-ranked institution in Indiana and remains one of the few universities in the state to earn a place among the nation’s top schools.
The university performed even better in the value category. Notre Dame ranked 17th among national universities for overall value. This ranking reflects factors such as academic performance, graduation outcomes, and the benefits students receive compared with the cost of attendance.
Purdue University experienced mixed results in the latest rankings. The university dropped nine positions in the overall national university list and now stands at No. 55. Despite that decline, Purdue made significant gains in value rankings.
The university rose 25 places to No. 57 among national universities for value. Purdue also earned national recognition in a newly introduced ranking focused on value for in-state students.
In that category, Purdue ranked 14th in the nation. The university’s long-running tuition freeze likely contributed to the strong result. Purdue has maintained the same tuition rates for 14 consecutive years, helping students avoid many of the cost increases seen at other institutions.
Indiana University Bloomington also held steady in the latest rankings. The university remained at No. 73 among national universities. While its overall position did not change, the school earned strong marks in categories related to affordability and student value.
For in-state students, Indiana University ranked 23rd among the nation’s best value schools. The ranking highlights the university’s ability to provide educational opportunities while keeping costs competitive for residents.
Nationally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology secured the top position in the rankings. Princeton University placed second, while Harvard University ranked third.
The 2026-27 rankings produced more movement than many previous editions. U.S. News said the shifts were caused by changes to its methodology and updates to the Carnegie Classification framework, which is used to group colleges into categories such as national and regional universities.
Because of those adjustments, many institutions were moved into different ranking groups. U.S. News reported that about one-fifth of previously ranked schools changed categories this year.
One Indiana school affected by the change was Butler University. The private university in Indianapolis had previously been ranked among regional institutions in the Midwest. Under the updated classification system, Butler was moved into the national universities category.
In its new classification, Butler tied for 169th place among national universities. The shift reflects broader changes in how colleges are grouped and evaluated.
The rankings also include many specialized categories beyond overall university performance. These lists examine public institutions, innovation, and individual academic programs.
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology once again earned national recognition. The institution ranked first among undergraduate engineering programs at schools that do not offer doctoral degrees. Rose-Hulman has now held that top position for 28 straight years.
