The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an agreement with tight end Darnell Washington on a new four-year contract extension worth $42 million, according to reports.

The Darnell Washington contract includes $21 million in guaranteed money, marking a significant commitment from the franchise as it continues to strengthen its offensive roster for the coming seasons.

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler first shared details of the agreement on Wednesday night, confirming that both sides had finalized the long-term extension.

The deal comes shortly after reports that linebacker Nick Herbig also agreed to a major extension with the Steelers, signaling an active period of roster planning and long-term investment by the team.

Washington, who has developed into a key piece of Pittsburgh’s offense, recorded 31 receptions for 364 yards and one touchdown last season. While his receiving numbers remain modest, he has played an important role in blocking schemes and physical offensive sets since entering the league.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing around 300 pounds, Washington has been used frequently in multiple tight end and blocking formations. Coaches have highlighted his versatility and strength as valuable assets in both the passing and running game.

Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy recently praised Washington’s development, noting the tight end’s growing importance in the team’s offensive planning. He said the coaching staff has adjusted certain schemes to better utilize Washington’s skill set as they prepare for the upcoming season.

McCarthy emphasized that understanding players in detail during a coach’s first year with a team often leads to tactical adjustments, and Washington has been a key factor in shaping offensive decisions.

The extension reflects the Steelers’ confidence in Washington’s long-term potential and his fit within their evolving offensive system. Team officials believe his physical presence and blocking ability provide stability and flexibility in multiple formations.

The Steelers are currently in the middle of their mandatory minicamp, with the third day of activities taking place on Thursday. Organized team activities are set to continue next week as the team continues preparations for the new season.

Washington’s new contract also signals the organization’s broader strategy of locking in young talent early, ensuring continuity and depth across key positions.

As the Steelers continue to build their roster, the agreement with Washington is expected to play a central role in their offensive plans moving forward, particularly in run-heavy and short-yardage situations where his blocking ability stands out.

The deal positions Washington as one of the team’s long-term pieces as Pittsburgh looks to strengthen its competitiveness in the coming NFL seasons.
