The Washington Wizards have added guard Tre Mann in a multi-team NBA trade. The move also sends Cam Whitmore to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Julian Reese to the Denver Nuggets.
Washington will receive Mann, a 2027 second-round pick from the Los Angeles Clippers and cash. The Wizards will send Whitmore to Cleveland. Reese will go to Denver and is expected to be waived from his two-way deal.
The trade gives Washington another guard before the 2026-27 NBA season. It also creates more room on the roster.
Mann, 25, spent the past two seasons with the Charlotte Hornets. He was picked by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 18th pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
Mann spent his first two NBA seasons in Oklahoma City. His role became smaller over time. The Thunder then sent him to Charlotte before the 2024 trade deadline.
Mann later signed a three-year deal worth $24 million with the Hornets.
He had a strong finish to the 2023-24 season. He averaged 14.1 points over his final 13 games. He also shot 43.5% from the field during that run.
A back injury then kept him out for much of the next season. He returned in 2025-26 and played 53 games. He averaged 5.5 points per game.
The Wizards see Mann as a possible fit for their backcourt. The team has been looking for another guard as it builds its roster for the new season.
The move also reunites Mann with Wizards general manager Will Dawkins. Dawkins was part of the Oklahoma City front office when the Thunder drafted Mann.
For Washington, the trade means the end of Whitmore’s short stay with his hometown team.
Whitmore joined the Wizards before the 2025-26 season. He played only 21 games. He averaged 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in those games.
A blood clot issue in his shoulder ended his season. He was ruled out for the rest of the season in January.
Whitmore had been expected to compete for a larger role in Washington. But the Wizards had several young wings on the roster. That made his place on the team less certain.
The Cavaliers now get a young forward with scoring skill. Whitmore will have another chance to build his role with a new team.
Reese is also leaving Washington after one season. The forward played on a two-way contract with the Wizards.
He gave the team several strong moments during his rookie season. Reese had 18 points and 20 rebounds in his third NBA game.
He finished the season with five double-doubles. He also averaged 11.8 points and 10.5 rebounds in 13 games.
Reese started 10 of those games. He played 30.9 minutes per game during that stretch.
Denver is expected to waive Reese after receiving him in the trade. His move to the Nuggets is part of the larger deal that also involves the Cavaliers and Clippers.
The wider trade centers on Denver forward Peyton Watson. Cleveland is acquiring Watson in a major deal that also sends veteran wing Max Strus to the Clippers.
The Wizards were not the main focus of that trade. But their involvement allowed Washington to add Mann and another future draft asset.
The 2027 second-round pick coming to Washington is from the Clippers. The Wizards will now have three second-round picks for the 2027 NBA Draft, according to reports.
The deal also gives Washington more roster flexibility. The Wizards are expected to have two open standard roster spots and an open two-way spot after the moves.
Washington now must decide how to use that space before the regular season begins.
The Wizards are still building around a young core. Adding Mann gives them another guard who has already played several NBA seasons.
For Whitmore and Reese, the trade brings an early end to their time in Washington. For Mann, it offers a fresh start with a team that needs more depth in the backcourt.
The Wizards now have another piece to assess as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.
