Federal authorities have launched a National Mall Vandalism Investigation after markings displaying the numbers “8647” were discovered on the grounds near the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.
The markings were observed on Thursday and appeared in a grassy area of the National Mall. Images captured from the top of the Washington Monument showed the numbers faintly visible on the lawn, with the World War II Memorial visible in the background.
According to reports, a photographer documented the markings before federal officials arrived at the scene to begin an investigation.
Photographs showed that the number “8” appeared most clearly, while the numbers “6” and “7” were less visible. The number “4” appeared faintest in the images.
Authorities have not yet determined how the markings were created or who may be responsible.
The U.S. Park Police confirmed that officers responded to a report of vandalism at approximately 11:30 a.m.
In an official statement, the agency said the numbers “8647” had been marked in the grass on the west lawn of the Washington Monument.
Investigators have collected grass samples from the area for laboratory testing as they work to determine the cause of the discoloration.

The Department of the Interior also addressed the incident.
