Larry David has spoken about the end of his friendship with lawyer Alan Dershowitz. He said Dershowitz “made a deal with the devil” when he became a lawyer for Donald Trump.
David and Dershowitz were once friends and neighbors on Martha’s Vineyard. Their friendship ended after a public clash in 2021.
Dershowitz was a law professor at Harvard University. He has represented several high-profile clients during his long legal career. They include Trump, Jeffrey Epstein, OJ Simpson and Harvey Weinstein.
He also joined Trump’s legal team during Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2020.
Reports of the clash between David and Dershowitz first appeared in 2021. The two men were said to have argued while shopping on Martha’s Vineyard.
Dershowitz later confirmed the story. He said David refused to speak with him and called him “disgusting.”
The two had once spent time together often. Dershowitz said David had visited his home for dinner and used his gym.
David has now spoken about the dispute in a new profile of Dershowitz in The Atlantic.
David said he rarely has confrontations in his real life. He joked that he tends to avoid them unless he thinks he could win a fight.
Dershowitz also spoke about the end of their friendship. He said he was hurt that David did not contact him after his son Elon died from a stroke last year at age 64.
David said he had started to feel sorry for Dershowitz, especially because of the death of his son.
He also said he regretted not reaching out after the death.
David then gave a more direct view of their broken friendship. He said he did not want to be cruel because Dershowitz had become isolated from many people.
But David added that Dershowitz was responsible for his own isolation.
“He made a deal with the devil,” David said. He added that he would bet the devil had not spoken to Dershowitz since Trump’s impeachment trial.
The comments show that the political divide between the two former friends remains strong.
Dershowitz has been a supporter of Trump for years. He defended the former president during his first impeachment trial in the US Senate.
In April, Dershowitz also announced that he was joining the Republican Party. He had supported Democrats for decades before making the change.
Dershowitz said the Democratic Party had become strongly opposed to Israel. He called it the “most anti-Israel party in US history.”
His political shift has added to his growing ties with Trump and the Republican Party.
Dershowitz has also faced legal battles linked to his work for Trump. In June, the US Supreme Court rejected his request to revive a $300 million defamation case against CNN.
Dershowitz had sued CNN over its coverage of comments he made while defending Trump. He said the network edited his remarks in a way that falsely made him appear to have “lost his mind.”
The court’s decision ended his effort to revive the case.
David, meanwhile, remains one of the best-known comedy writers and actors in the US. He created Curb Your Enthusiasm and co-created Seinfeld.
His comments about Dershowitz also reflect themes often seen in his comedy. David is known for turning social conflict and awkward personal disputes into humor.
The friendship between David and Dershowitz appears unlikely to return soon. Their political views remain far apart, while David’s latest comments show that he still has strong feelings about Dershowitz’s decision to defend Trump.
