In a surprising legal shift, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty on Friday to federal stalking charges connected to the death of top health care leader Brian Thompson. The decision alters the course of a case that grabbed national news headlines and ignited intense public debate.

Mangione, 28, gave a direct statement during his court appearance in Manhattan. He confessed to shooting Thompson outside a Midtown hotel in late 2024. Thompson worked as the chief executive officer for UnitedHealthcare. He was visiting New York to participate in an annual company conference for investors.

During his statement, Mangione explained the steps he took before the incident. He admitted to tracking Thompson to the hotel location. He also acknowledged using a 3D-printed firearm fitted with a suppressor to shoot the executive. To gather key details about the schedule, Mangione emailed the company while pretending to be an investor. Prosecutors added that video footage showed Mangione following Thompson the day prior to the attack.

This guilty plea represents a major turn in defense strategy. Mangione had earlier entered not-guilty pleas to both state and federal accusations.Under the federal charges, he faces a potential maximum sentence of life behind bars. The presiding judge scheduled the formal sentencing for December.

The morning shooting of a prominent executive caused immediate shockwaves. It also fueled broad public discussions about private health coverage practices.Mangione had voiced harsh criticism against what he described as greed within the medical insurance field. His comments struck a chord with people who feel mistreated by coverage decisions. Some supporters have worn custom T-shirts to his court dates, while the story inspired internet memes and themed goods.

However, federal law enforcement authorities strongly denounced the act outside the courthouse. Jamie McDonald, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, spoke to the media following the hearing.

“Any person who celebrates, encourages or excuses actions like these is fundamentally wrong,” McDonald told reporters. He emphasized that violent acts must never serve as a tool to push political or social beliefs.

The family of Brian Thompson released a statement after the court proceeding. They expressed relief that the federal case resulted in accountability.

“While nothing will ease the pain of losing him, we are grateful that the federal justice system has held the person responsible for this heinous act accountable,” the family stated. They urged the court to issue a sentence that matches the severe nature of the crime.

Defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo spoke to reporters about her client’s past health battles. She stated that Mangione suffered from long-term back pain after an injury. He struggled to navigate the complex medical care system. She noted that he felt the system had ruined his life.

His defense team also criticized the government for pursuing dual cases in different courts. The lawyers filed a motion on Friday asking the state court to drop its pending charges.

Mangione was set to go to trial for state murder charges on September 8. However, New York law restricts double prosecutions for similar offenses once a federal conviction occurs.Legal analysts say the federal plea creates significant challenges for state prosecutors.

Anna Cominsky, a law professor at New York Law School, noted that double jeopardy rules will likely play a major role.State attorneys plan to oppose the defense motion, but the new plea changes the legal ground.

The ongoing proceedings continue to draw close attention from observers across the country. Nora Williams, 28, stood outside the courthouse on Friday. She stated that Thompson did not deserve to die, but she feels the double charges raise fair questions.Public interest remains high as the court prepares for the December sentencing date.
