Medical authorities in the United States, including officials in Nebraska, confirmed that 18 American passengers were safely evacuated from the ship. They were transported under medical supervision and placed under observation after returning home.
U.S. health officials, including Adm. Brian Christine of the Public Health Service, said the risk to the general public remains very low. He stressed that hantavirus does not spread easily between people and requires close and prolonged contact in most cases.
He also explained that the strain involved, known as the Andes variant, is considered less likely to spread widely compared to other infectious diseases. This has helped ease concerns about a large-scale outbreak in the United States.
Despite this reassurance, the situation has drawn global attention due to the international nature of the ship’s passengers. Health monitoring and quarantine measures have been applied in several countries as passengers returned home.
