The Washington Nationals made major roster changes on Tuesday as top prospect Dylan Crews returned to the major leagues ahead of the team’s game against the New York Mets. The move came less than two months after the young outfielder was unexpectedly sent down near the end of spring training.
The Nationals recalled Crews from Triple-A Rochester as part of a broader reshuffle involving several players. Washington also brought back Andrés Chaparro from Rochester while sending outfielder Joey Wiemer to the minors. The changes followed Monday’s difficult 16-7 extra-innings loss to the Mets.
The biggest development centered on the return of Crews, whose comeback quickly became one of the top stories surrounding the team. The Dylan Crews season debut marks another important step for one of baseball’s most highly regarded young players. Crews was selected second overall in the 2023 MLB Draft and entered professional baseball with massive expectations.
The 22-year-old outfielder posted solid numbers in Triple-A this season. He hit .258 with five home runs and 20 RBIs across 41 games for Rochester. Team officials said his performance improved significantly during the past few weeks after a slow start earlier in the year.
Crews struggled during spring training, batting just .103 without an extra-base hit in 29 at-bats. Despite the disappointing spring numbers, Washington executives believed his overall approach at the plate showed positive signs. Nationals president of baseball operations Paul Toboni said the organization focused on Crews’ quality at-bats and hard contact rather than only looking at traditional statistics.
Crews said he stayed focused on improving instead of worrying about returning to the majors.
“You’re never trying to think about being called back up,” Crews said. “I was just so focused on the process down there and trying to stack good days.”
The Nationals planned to bat Crews sixth and place him in center field against the Mets on Tuesday night. His return creates an interesting challenge for Washington’s coaching staff because the team now has several young outfielders competing for playing time.
James Wood, Daylen Lile, and Jacob Young have all been regular starters this season. Manager Blake Butera said the club plans to rotate players through the designated hitter spot to keep everyone fresh during the long season.
Young was unavailable for Tuesday’s lineup after being hit in the rib cage by a pitch during Monday’s game. Still, Butera said the organization believes it can create enough opportunities for all four outfielders.
While Crews returned, another young Nationals player headed back to the minors. The team optioned third baseman Brady House to Triple-A Rochester after a difficult stretch in the majors.
House, Washington’s first-round draft pick in 2021, has shown flashes of power this season. He recorded seven home runs and 25 RBIs while appearing in nearly every Nationals game. However, his offensive struggles against right-handed pitchers became a growing concern.
Statistics showed a major split in his performance. House hit only .174 with a .550 OPS against right-handed pitching, compared with a strong .354 average and .988 OPS against left-handed pitchers. Defensive issues also played a role in the decision. House currently shares the National League lead with eight errors.
Manager Butera stressed that the demotion was designed to help House continue developing rather than punish him.
“We told him he has the tools to be a major league third baseman for a long time and help us win for a long time,” Butera explained. “He needs to play every day.”
The Nationals remain focused on building around their young core as the season continues. The return of Crews and the temporary demotion of House highlight the balancing act teams face while developing top prospects at the major league level.
