A US Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed into a mountainous forest area in Washington state after the pilot safely ejected, military officials confirmed. The incident occurred near Rimrock Lake in the state’s wooded inland region during a routine training mission.
The aircraft was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11 under the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Officials described the incident as a “non-fatal aviation mishap” involving a jet based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California.
According to initial reports, the fighter jet was conducting standard training operations when it went down around midday. The pilot managed to eject before impact and was later recovered by local authorities in the area.
Emergency responders from the Naches Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service were quickly deployed to the crash site. Crews also worked to contain a wildfire that was sparked by the wreckage upon impact.
Fire officials said their teams focused on protecting nearby structures, including cabins in the Bear Creek area. Water support units remained on standby to assist with continued firefighting and cleanup operations in the forest.
A deputy from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office made contact with the pilot shortly after the crash. The pilot was later transported to hospital for medical evaluation following the ejection and landing in difficult terrain.
The crash site lies within the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, roughly 125 miles southeast of Seattle. The remote and mountainous area made access difficult for emergency crews responding to the scene.
Military officials confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the cause of the crash. They said it could take several months to determine what led to the incident and emphasized that no further details will be released during the active investigation.
The Marine Aircraft Group said it is standard procedure to restrict information during ongoing inquiries in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation process.
