The Washington DC air quality sharply declined after a large Fourth of July fireworks display, prompting city officials to issue a Code Red Air Quality Alert and urge residents to reduce outdoor activity.

The temporary drop in air quality came after a 40-minute fireworks show held as part of Independence Day celebrations in the U.S. capital. Air quality monitoring data showed that Washington, DC, briefly recorded the worst air quality among major cities worldwide before conditions gradually improved later in the day.

Officials warned that smoke and fine particles released during the fireworks created unhealthy conditions across the city. Residents were advised to stay indoors when possible and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities until air quality improved.

The Code Red alert indicated that air pollution had reached levels that could affect everyone’s health, not only people in sensitive groups. Health officials said children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions faced the highest risk from the poor air quality.

City authorities also warned that even healthy individuals could experience symptoms such as eye irritation, coughing, throat discomfort, or shortness of breath while spending extended periods outdoors.

According to air quality monitoring platform IQAir, Washington, DC, briefly ranked as the world’s most polluted major city during the period of heavy smoke. By approximately 5:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, the city’s ranking had fallen significantly as air conditions began to recover.

Fireworks displays often release large amounts of fine particulate matter into the atmosphere. These tiny particles can remain suspended in the air for several hours, especially when weather conditions limit air circulation.

Environmental experts note that fireworks also produce gases and metal particles used to create colorful visual effects. These emissions can temporarily reduce air quality, particularly after large-scale public celebrations.

The Independence Day fireworks show was organized by Freedom 250, a nonprofit organization supporting events connected to the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations. The organization has received backing from President Donald Trump and is coordinating several commemorative activities leading up to the national milestone.

The fireworks display took place during a period of extreme summer weather affecting Washington, DC, and much of the northeastern United States. High temperatures and limited wind created conditions that allowed smoke to remain concentrated near the ground for a longer period.

The capital experienced temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the holiday weekend, adding to concerns about public health. Heat combined with poor air quality can increase health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.

Medical experts recommend limiting outdoor exercise during periods of unhealthy air quality. They also advise keeping windows closed, using air conditioning with clean filters when available, and following local health guidance until pollution levels return to safer ranges.

People with asthma or other breathing conditions are encouraged to keep prescribed medications nearby and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe. Parents are also advised to reduce outdoor play for children during air quality alerts.

Air quality in Washington improved later on Sunday as smoke gradually dispersed. However, officials continued to monitor pollution levels and encouraged residents to check local forecasts before spending long periods outside.

Large fireworks celebrations are a traditional part of Fourth of July events across the United States. While they attract millions of spectators each year, environmental researchers have increasingly studied their short-term effects on air pollution and public health.

Studies have shown that air pollution from fireworks usually declines within several hours as weather conditions improve. However, the duration can vary depending on wind speed, humidity, and atmospheric conditions.

The Washington DC air quality alert serves as a reminder that major public celebrations can temporarily affect environmental conditions. Health officials continue to encourage residents to stay informed during air quality advisories and take simple precautions to reduce exposure whenever pollution reaches unhealthy levels.
