The Independence Day Parade in Washington, D.C., has been canceled because of dangerous heat expected across the nation’s capital on July 4.
Event organizers announced the cancellation after weather forecasts predicted heat index values well above 100 degrees. Officials said the decision was made to protect participants, spectators, volunteers, and staff from the risks linked to extreme temperatures.
Todd Marcocci, president of Under the Sun Productions Inc., the company organizing the parade, said public safety was the main reason for calling off the event.
He explained that organizers carefully reviewed the weather conditions before making the final decision. According to Marcocci, the health and safety of everyone involved remained the highest priority throughout the planning process.
The cancellation comes as a powerful heatwave continues to affect large parts of the eastern United States. Weather officials have warned that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, especially during outdoor events.
