A Washington Parish UTV crash has left a 48-year-old man dead after his off-road vehicle entered traffic and collided with a car on LA Highway 25 near E. Daniels Road on Sunday afternoon.
The victim has been identified as Timothy Blackwell of Folsom. Authorities said he was driving a Can-Am UTV northbound along the shoulder of the highway around 1:20 p.m. when the crash occurred.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop L, the UTV moved from the shoulder into the northbound lane of travel for reasons that are still under investigation. At the same time, a 2004 Saturn ION was traveling north on the same roadway.
Investigators said the Saturn struck the UTV shortly after it entered the lane. The impact caused severe consequences, resulting in fatal injuries for the UTV driver.
Officials confirmed that Blackwell was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the Washington Parish UTV crash. He was thrown from the vehicle on impact and died at the scene before emergency responders could provide aid.
Two other people were involved in the incident, including a passenger in the UTV and the driver of the Saturn. Authorities said both individuals were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Both survivors sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Their current conditions have not been publicly updated.
Law enforcement officials said standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers as part of the ongoing investigation. These tests are routine in serious crash cases and will help determine whether any impairment played a role.
The crash scene on LA Highway 25 was secured by responding officers while investigators documented evidence and examined vehicle positions. Traffic in the area was affected for a period of time during the initial response.
Officials have not yet confirmed why the UTV moved from the shoulder into the lane of traffic. Investigators are reviewing witness statements, vehicle data, and other available evidence to understand the sequence of events.
The Washington Parish UTV crash highlights the risks associated with mixing off-road vehicles and highway traffic. Safety experts note that UTVs and similar vehicles are not always designed for standard roadway use unless properly equipped and operated under strict conditions.
Authorities are reminding drivers and off-road vehicle operators to follow safety rules, including seatbelt use and careful road entry practices. Even short moments of misjudgment can lead to serious or fatal outcomes.
Louisiana State Police said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details may be released as more information becomes available.
