A car explosion in southern Moscow on Monday claimed the life of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior official in the Russian Armed Forces. The blast, which occurred in a parking lot adjacent to a residential building, left Sarvarov critically injured. He later died from his wounds, the Russian Investigative Committee confirmed. Sarvarov headed the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff, making him one of the country’s top military figures.

    Investigation Underway

Russian authorities quickly opened a criminal case following the explosion. Investigators said the motive remains unclear, and details about the explosive device or its detonation method have not been released. Officials described the case as a targeted attack and emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the events surrounding the explosion.

    Potential Foreign Involvement

Authorities are exploring multiple lines of inquiry, including the possibility that Ukrainian intelligence played a role. “Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of enquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” said Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for the Investigative Committee. She added that forensic examinations, explosive tests, witness interviews, and security camera reviews are all part of the investigation.

    No Response From Kyiv

Ukrainian officials have not commented on the allegations, and Russian authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or offered evidence linking the attack to foreign actors.

Part of a Series of Attacks

Sarvarov’s death follows a string of high-profile killings of Russian military officials in Moscow since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In December 2024, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was killed by a remotely detonated scooter, and in April, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik died in a car bomb attack. Neither incident has been officially claimed by Ukraine.
