US Forces Arrest Maduro as Washington Declares Temporary Control of Venezuela

In a stunning and unprecedented move, US forces arrested Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas and transported them to New York to face criminal charges. The operation has sent shockwaves around the world and marked a major escalation of US involvement in the South American nation.

President Donald Trump announced that Washington would assume temporary control of Venezuela to ensure a “safe, proper and judicious transition.” “We can’t take a chance that somebody else takes over Venezuela who doesn’t have the good of the Venezuelan people in mind,” Trump said during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

    Washington Steps In

Trump said the US would run the country with a small leadership group, naming Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine as key figures. Despite repeated questions, Trump offered few details about how the interim administration would operate.

At one point, he claimed Venezuela’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, had been sworn in as Maduro’s successor and was ready to cooperate with US plans. However, Venezuelan authorities have not confirmed any such swearing-in.

Trump also outlined plans for US companies to invest in rebuilding Venezuela’s damaged oil infrastructure. “We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies… spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure, and start making money for the country,” he said. He warned that the US was prepared to launch “a second and much larger attack” if necessary.

    Legal Basis and Political Fallout

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the operation as a law enforcement mission supported by the military, saying it did not require Congressional approval. Maduro, he noted, had been indicted in the US in 2020 and was a fugitive with a $50 million reward on his head. Trump said Congress had not been informed in advance to prevent leaks.

The operation drew criticism from Democrats. Senator Mark Warner warned it set a dangerous precedent, suggesting that if the US claims the right to capture foreign leaders, other nations could do the same. Warner also highlighted what he called the administration’s hypocrisy, pointing to Trump’s earlier pardon of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, convicted on serious drug trafficking charges.

    Risks and Uncertain Future

Republicans largely supported the operation. Senator Roger Wicker praised the mission as a successful effort to weaken criminal networks linked to Maduro and called on the Venezuelan people to restore peace and prosperity in their country.

Analysts, however, cautioned that the arrests could trigger instability. Daniel DePetris of the Defense Priorities think tank said potential outcomes range from a split in the Venezuelan military and a rise in criminal groups to civil war or the emergence of a harsher autocrat. “Whether that change will be positive or negative in the long term remains to be seen,” he said.

The Trump administration’s reasoning for its pressure on Maduro has shifted over the months, citing drug trafficking, stolen oil resources, and promoting democracy as justifications. Yet DePetris argued that Venezuela, with its collapsed economy, poses far less of a strategic threat than the rhetoric suggests.
