Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has endorsed progressive challengers running against two longtime Democratic lawmakers, creating fresh political tension ahead of Washington state’s August primary election. The move highlights growing divisions within the Democratic Party as progressive candidates challenge established leaders.

Wilson announced her support for Hannah Sabio-Howell, who is running against Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen in Seattle’s 43rd Legislative District. She also endorsed Ron Davis, who is challenging Representative Gerry Pollet in the 46th Legislative District.

The endorsements place the first-term mayor on the side of newer progressive candidates instead of veteran lawmakers who have represented Seattle for many years.

Wilson confirmed the endorsements in a public statement on Saturday. She said she understands that elected officials often support fellow incumbents, but added that she wants to take a different approach.

According to Wilson, voters are increasingly frustrated with the political status quo and are looking for new leadership and fresh ideas.

She also announced her support for Jaelynn Scott, who is seeking a House seat in the 37th Legislative District. The seat became open after Representative Chipalo Street decided to run for the state Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Jamie Pedersen said he had previously asked Wilson for her endorsement but did not receive it. He said he was disappointed by her decision to support his challenger instead.

Pedersen has represented the district since 2006 and became Senate majority leader in late 2024. He played a leading role in creating Washington state’s new income tax on high earners.

He said he had hoped the mayor would focus her efforts on defending that policy instead of supporting primary challengers.

Representative Gerry Pollet also expressed surprise over Wilson’s decision. He said he has worked closely with Seattle city leaders for many years and believes he has consistently supported the city’s priorities in the state Legislature.

Pollet said Wilson explained that her decision was based partly on her relationship with Ron Davis, who helped organize fundraising efforts during her successful mayoral campaign.

Wilson praised Davis in her statement, describing him as a dedicated community leader who understands housing policy and regularly meets with residents to hear their concerns.

She also praised Sabio-Howell, saying the progressive activist has spent years organizing for stronger labor protections and workers’ rights. Wilson said she believes Sabio-Howell would effectively represent one of Washington state’s most progressive legislative districts.

Sabio-Howell has criticized Pedersen for what she describes as a gradual and corporate approach to policymaking. Her campaign supports higher taxes on large corporations and restrictions on police departments hiring former immigration officers.

Political observers say Wilson’s endorsements reflect broader changes within the Democratic Party. Progressive candidates across the country have recently gained momentum by promoting policies focused on economic reform, affordable housing, and expanded workers’ rights.

Some analysts believe the mayor’s decision may have been influenced by recent progressive victories in other major cities. They say those election results have encouraged progressive leaders to challenge longtime incumbents more aggressively.

Political consultant Sandeep Kaushik described Wilson’s move as a high-risk political decision. He said the endorsements could strengthen her standing with progressive voters if her preferred candidates win. However, he warned that her relationships with experienced lawmakers could become more difficult if the incumbents remain in office.

Despite the endorsements, both legislative races remain highly competitive.

Campaign finance records show Pedersen has raised about $345,000, while Sabio-Howell has raised approximately $81,500. A third candidate in the race has reported little campaign fundraising.

In the 46th District race, Will Dreher currently leads in fundraising with roughly $257,000. Pollet has about $165,000, while Davis has raised approximately $135,000. Because three Democratic candidates are competing, the primary election could produce an unexpected outcome.

Washington’s primary election is scheduled for August 4. As campaigning continues, Wilson’s endorsements have become one of the most closely watched developments in the state’s Democratic politics, highlighting the ongoing debate between experienced party leaders and a new generation of progressive candidates.
