Former FBI Director James Comey appeared in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, as he faces a new James Comey Indictment tied to an alleged threat against President Donald Trump. The case centers on a social media post showing seashells arranged in the shape of “86 47,” which prosecutors say was a hidden message threatening harm. Comey denies any intent to threaten the president.

The hearing on Wednesday lasted only a few minutes. Comey did not enter a plea. His lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, told the court he plans to file a motion to dismiss the case. He argues the charges represent vindictive prosecution and are politically motivated. He also asked the court to preserve statements made by both the government and Trump that he says may be relevant to the defense.

The judge noted that Comey will remain free without conditions while the case moves forward. The courtroom appearance drew attention because it comes after a second federal indictment in less than a year. Comey’s family attended the brief hearing. The case will now proceed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

The James Comey Indictment is based on an Instagram post made during a vacation in North Carolina last May. The post showed seashells on a beach arranged in the numbers “86 47.” Authorities say this was interpreted as a threat against Trump, who is the 47th president. The term “86” is often used to mean remove or eject, but prosecutors argue it can also imply violent intent depending on context.

Comey has strongly denied any wrongdoing. He said he saw the arrangement as a political message and did not know it could be linked to violence. He removed the post shortly after backlash began. He also said he opposes violence in any form and did not intend harm. His legal team argues the interpretation of the image is being stretched beyond its meaning.

President Trump has publicly supported the charges. He told reporters at the White House that the term “86” can be used as a mob expression for killing. He also repeated past criticisms of Comey, calling him a “dirty cop” and accusing him of misconduct during investigations tied to the 2016 election. Trump said he believed the situation raised concerns for his safety.

Federal prosecutors claim Comey knowingly posted a message that could be seen as a threat. The indictment says the image would be understood as a serious expression of intent to harm the president. However, the filing does not include detailed evidence beyond the post itself and its interpretation.

The case has also raised questions about political pressure on federal investigations. Comey’s lawyer argues that comments from political leaders and officials have influenced the prosecution. He believes the case should be dismissed due to selective or vindictive targeting. This argument will be a key part of the upcoming legal challenge.

This is not the first legal case involving Comey. A previous indictment last year was dismissed after a court ruled that the prosecutor involved was not properly appointed. That earlier case was also criticized by some legal observers as politically charged.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the investigation into the Instagram post has been ongoing for several months. He stated that investigators reviewed the evidence before deciding to bring charges. However, critics argue that the indictment remains light on detailed proof of intent.

The James Comey Indictment now moves into the next legal phase as defense lawyers prepare their motion to dismiss. The court will later decide whether the case will proceed to trial or be thrown out. The outcome is likely to draw significant attention given Comey’s past role in major political investigations and the current political climate in Washington.
