The Radev Bulgaria Election has delivered a major political shift in Bulgaria. Former president Rumen Radev has secured an absolute majority in parliament. The result may bring stability after years of weak coalition governments. However, it has also raised questions about Bulgaria’s future direction in Europe and its ties with Russia.

With more than 97% of votes counted, Radev’s Progressive Bulgaria party won about 44.7% of the vote. This gives the party an estimated 131 seats in the 240-seat parliament. It is the first time since 1997 that a single political force has gained such a strong majority.

The country has faced repeated elections in recent years. Since 2021, Bulgaria has held eight national votes. Many of these followed public protests against corruption and political instability. These protests helped weaken long-standing parties and open space for new political forces.

Radev, a former fighter pilot and air force commander, built his campaign around anti-corruption promises. He focused on public anger over political elites and promised change. After the results, he called the win a “victory of hope” and a step toward restoring trust in government.

His party’s victory came well ahead of rivals. The conservative GERB party, led by Boyko Borissov, received around 13.4% of the vote. The pro-European coalition We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria also performed lower than expected.

Despite his win, Radev’s political position is complex. He has spoken in favor of Bulgaria’s European Union membership. At the same time, he has criticized some EU policies and called for a more balanced approach in global politics.

He has also pushed for improved relations with Russia. He has spoken about restarting energy cooperation and maintaining what he calls “practical relations” with Moscow. These comments have raised concerns in Brussels and other EU capitals.

Bulgaria’s location adds to the sensitivity. The country is an EU and NATO member and sits on the Black Sea. This makes its foreign policy direction important for both European security and regional stability.

The Kremlin responded positively to the election result. Russian officials welcomed Radev’s comments about dialogue and cooperation. This reaction has increased concern among analysts who warn about possible shifts in Bulgaria’s foreign policy.

At the same time, Radev has denied being aligned with Moscow. He has repeatedly said he supports Bulgaria’s EU and NATO membership. His aides also stress that Bulgarians want continued participation in Western alliances.

Still, his past statements have created debate. He has opposed sending arms to Ukraine and criticized some defence agreements involving Kyiv. These positions have made him controversial within EU political circles.

Experts say Radev’s approach is based on balance rather than clear alignment. He has avoided fully committing to either pro-Western or pro-Russian positions. Instead, he has focused heavily on domestic issues such as corruption and governance.

This strategy helped him attract voters from across the political spectrum. He gained support from both the far right and voters disappointed with traditional parties. Even the Revival party saw reduced support in this election.

However, analysts warn that winning does not guarantee reform. Bulgaria’s institutions, including the judiciary and regulatory bodies, remain weak. Some experts say real change would require deeper structural reforms and wider political cooperation.

Despite the concerns, voter turnout was higher than in recent elections. This suggests renewed public interest in politics. Many voters expressed hope that the new government will bring stability and reduce corruption.

One voter who recently returned from abroad said he is optimistic about change and better governance. He believes long-standing political problems may finally be addressed.

Others, however, remain worried. Some citizens fear closer ties with Russia and a possible shift away from European values. They say Bulgaria’s future direction is still uncertain.

The Radev Bulgaria Election marks a turning point for the country. It brings strong political control to one party for the first time in decades. But it also opens a new debate about Bulgaria’s role between the European Union and Russia.
